The Office of the County Assessor:

  • Lists and identifies location of property.
  • Collects, analyzes and interprets market and cost trends.
  • Does not tax your property, but values it for property tax purposes.
  • Values property in conformance with professional standards of the International Association of Assessing Officers and the laws of the State of New Mexico.
  • Applies state laws that exempt certain properties and also allow for lower values for long term residential property owners.
  • Reports to the property owner the value of his property through the Notice of Value in April annually.
  • Defends the value placed on the property at the Valuation Protest Board.

Mission Statement

The Office of the Santa Fe County Assessor will value all taxable property using professional standards and ethics of the International Association of Assessing Officers as well as the laws of the State of New Mexico to achieve fair and equitable values, to the extent allowed by law for all property owners in Santa Fe County.

Biography

Domingo Martinez is the Santa Fe County Assessor elected in November 2006. He is a graduate of the College of Santa Fe with a Bachelors degree in accounting and a graduate of the University of New Mexico with a Masters degree in public administration. He holds the professional designation of Certified Government Financial Manager and New Mexico Certified Appraiser.

Prior to being elected County Assessor, Mr. Martinez served as New Mexico State Auditor for eight years. He was also the Director of the Property Tax Division of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department for eight years and a Rate Analyst Manager for the Insurance Department of the New Mexico State Corporation Commission. He has also served as a Legislative Financial Analyst for the New Mexico State Legislature for the past twenty sessions. He has over 33 years of experience with the State of New Mexico working with federal, state and local government entities.

Mr. Martinez is a member of several professional organizations including the Association of Government Accountants, the New Mexico Society of Public Accountants, and the International Association of Assessing officers.

Mr. Martinez has been active in many organizations, committees and boards that benefit many citizens. His current work with SER Job's for Progress as a Board member at the national and local level, which works with work force development displaced workers, rural economic development, at risk students, drop outs and young parents, has been a Presidential award winning program.

We are open to the public during the following business hours: Monday through Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. Closed for business on Saturdays, Sundays and County Holidays.
